The Panama Canal, known as the eighth wonder of the world, is a 50-mile (80-kilometer) shipping channel that links the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is a key conduit for international maritime trade and one of the greatest engineering feats in history. The Miraflores Locks are one of three sets of locks that function as water elevators, raising and lowering ships from sea level to the water level of Gatun Lake.
